Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games bought together 4100 athletes from 71 nations for 12 days of ceremonies and elite sporting competition from March 15-26. The Games sold an unprecedented 1.5 million tickets, attracted more than two million people to non-ticket components, more than 90,000 interstate and international visitors came and was broadcast to a potential television audience of 1.5 billion people. The official Games website had more than 11 million users in March. As well as confirming Melbourne’s status as a world-leading sporting and cultural capital, the Games presented Victoria as a fun, sophisticated, safe and friendly tourist destination around the world.
