Gippsland Tourism Bushfire Response & Recovery Group

The Moondarra bushfires were lit on 19th January, 2006. The Gippsland tourism industry was preparing for one of the busiest weekends of the year. Within two weeks it had burnt more than 15,000 hectares.
The Gippsland Tourism Response and Recovery Group coordinated a swift response by government, community and industry on behalf of the tourism sector. This small, but dedicated group turned a potential economic disaster into a
non-issue within 8 weeks.
The focus was on uniting the community, supporting positive steps to recovery, and ensuring a smooth transition towards promotion of Gippslands’ key attractions once the fire was extinguished.
